Lorraine Bitter, age 97 of Long Branch passed away on Tuesday, January 16, 2018. Born in Newark, Lorraine also lived in East Orange, NJ, Southold Long Island and Washington, DC before moving back to New Jersey in 1954. Growing up in her grandfather's farm in Southold, Lorraine learned to knit and crochet. She also became an avid bird watcher and enjoyed watching them from her grandfather's front porch.
A graduate of East Orange High School, Lorraine worked as a secretary for a defense plant during WWII. While living in Washington, DC she worked in the personnel office for Morris Cafritz, a wealthy Washington real estate entrepreneur. In 1950 she left the workforce to become a stay at home mom.
Lorraine was very active in local politics and organizations. She was a member of the PTA, Asbury United Methodist Church, the Long Branch Women’s Club, the Women's Republican Club, the Long Branch City Republican Organization, Long Branch Historical Association and the Long Branch Community Club where she held positions as President, Vice President and Trustee. She was also a member of the Monmouth County Federation of Republican Women for 31 years and the Clean Water Association of Monmouth County.
Lorraine is predeceased by her beloved husband Ralph H. Bitter of 54 years, her parents George and Irene Bick, brothers George and Earnest Bick, and sister Arline Hill. Surviving are her daughter Renee DeStefano, her husband Michael and their children Robert, Mark and Andrew DeStefano; her son Ralph Bitter III, his wife Annette and their children Ralph Bitter, IV and wife Jennifer, and Julie Tivvis and husband Timothy.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 21 from 1-5 pm at the Damiano Funeral Home, 191 Franklin Avenue in Long Branch. Funeral Monday; 10:30 am at the funeral home with the service to begin at 11:00 am. Entombment will follow at Woodbine Mausoleum in Oceanport.
