Obituary for Eleanor Ebbesen Widdis
Eleanor Ebbesen Widdis, of Oceanport, passed away peacefully in her home on Tuesday, January 30th, at the age of 96.
She was born in Brooklyn, NY, the oldest of five children of Sverre and Olga, who had recently immigrated from Norway. The Ebbesen family later moved to Freehold, NJ, where Eleanor graduated from Freehold High School, Monmouth Memorial School of Nursing, and Jersey City College, becoming the first in her family to earn a college degree.
Eleanor lived in Oceanport for 68 years. She was a nurse at Monmouth Memorial Hospital (now Monmouth Medical Center), as well as the school nurse in the Oceanport school system for 26 years before retiring in 1983. Eleanor was incredibly passionate about her career, took great joy in her work, and had an uncanny memory for each and every student that she worked with. She would recognize her former students in the bank and the grocery store decades after they graduated from Wolf Hill and Maple Place. Even after retirement, Eleanor remained actively involved in her community through the New Jersey Education Association, National Education Association, Oceanport Crafters, Monmouth County Retired Educators, Ocean Township Friendship Club, and Long Branch Historical Society.
Eleanor’s enthusiasm for her work as a school nurse was surpassed only by her love for her family and friends. She was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Over the years, she spent countless hours with her grandchildren, whom she adored. She was certainly the beloved matriarch of the Widdis family and we celebrate her memory.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Christopher G. Widdis; parents, Sverre and Olga Ebbesen; brothers, Gardner and J. Clinton Ebbesen; and sister-in-law, Grace Ebbesen.
She is survived by her sons; Christopher Widdis and his wife Susie, and James Widdis and his wife Susan; all of Oceanport. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Melissa and her fiancé Bill Frake of Red Bank, Lindsey of Sea Bright, Brian and his wife Leslie of Little Silver, and Stephen and his wife Laura of Colchester, VT; as well as her sister Dorothy Jamison Black and her brother John Ebbesen.
Visitation will be held on Friday, February 2, from 4-8 pm at the Damiano Funeral Home, 191 Franklin Avenue in Long Branch. Funeral, Saturday; 10:00 am at the funeral home with the service to begin at 10:30 am. Interment will follow at Woodbine Cemetery, Oceanport. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society, 2310 Rt. 34, Suite1D, Manasquan, NJ 08736 or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 14 Commerce Dr. Suite 301, Cranford, NJ 07016.
